Nothing White Reloaded - Intro and Graphic Notations

Re-visualizing a literary book with a visual theme can’t be an easy task, and it wasn’t. Moreover, Tomaso Carnetto dared to invite the author, that is me, to give the seminar at the Academy of Visual Arts. The students had to read the novel “Nothing White” in order to find what was defined as a “personal reference”. Carnetto, the director of this private educational institution in Frankfurt am Main, had revealed to me the most memorable passage in the text for him: “Later, it goes through the city gate at hello, the rear tire could have more air, Cristina gets the profile of the cobblestones stamped on her bottom”. But he, the original reader in this constellation, was not asked.

It quickly became apparent that students who were familiar with pictures and graphics would jump on passages in the text that condensed visual experiences-in this case, the experiences and adventures of my heroine, Marleen Schuller. What they didn’t expect was that the photographic and typographic tasks described in the novel actually existed. For example, the examples from the typography class in Kassel, which deal with the spatial visualization of a letter (Marleen’s is the “e”), all come from Christoph Gassner, who actually taught in Kassel and still keeps the best student work from that time in the drawers of his graphic cabinet. I visited him in his fantastic loft in the south of Darmstadt when I was writing the novel. Of course, I didn’t want the students in Frankfurt to reproduce his work.

The other hurdle I had to overcome was mine alone, for I was initially alienated by the students’ own interpretations of the text passages. Over the course of the semester, this went so far as to include key words in picture sections that were definitely not from my novel. One of the stipulations was that the seminar would not be a literal illustration of the text. So that’s what we got. They did whatever they wanted with it!

In the end, the works selected by the academy, the author and the publisher (we show three in three weeks) were all by women, which is not so strange when you know that the seminar was mainly attended by female students. According to the rumor, the majority of readers are women. And good ones at that.

»Das Schneiden, so wie es beschrieben wird, erinnerte mich daran, wie ich selbst vor Jahren, mit einem Teppichmesser an meinem Schreibtisch sitzend, bestimmte, vorgezeichnete Formen aus bedruckten Folien über einem Leuchtkasten ausgeschnitten habe.«

Hier tickt sie, die Uhr der Freundschaft, denn alle springen immer gleich auf, wenn sie gegessen haben. Die beiden sitzen über Eck, die Tabletts so weit fortgeschoben, dass sie sich berühren, und haben ihre Köpfe spiegelbildlich in einer Hand versenkt. Sie flüstern fast, obwohl es laut ist. Es fällt Marleen nicht leicht, mit ihm zu sprechen, weil er jedes Wort auf die Goldwaage legt. Und was er wiegt ist Blech.«

»Mein persönlicher Bezug liegt in dem Verweilen in der Mensa trotz Beenden des Essens. Ich sitze gerne noch etwas länger in der Mensa und beobachte andere beim Essen oder unterhalte mich mit Studierenden der Goethe Universität.«
